With the clock ticking on firefly season, it feels like the perfect time to celebrate photographer Pete Mauney, whose luminous nighttime photographs have become some of the most beloved editions in the 20x200 collection. Based in New York's Hudson Valley, Pete has spent years photographing the landscape after dark, patiently building images that feel equal parts documentary and psychedelic dream.

Working from a single fixed vantage point, he layers millions of moments into one photograph, choreographing scenes that could never exist in real life but that perfectly capture exactly what a summer night feels like. His photographs preserve the wonder of place and show TIME, which is one of those things that photography can do like no other medium.

Persistence and a healthy tolerance for long nights alone are at the center of Pete's practice. He returns to the same locations again and again, refining his process with each passing season and always finding new ways to see familiar places. Before long, he'll trade warm summer evenings for colder nights spent photographing the sweeping paths of airplanes across the sky, which is what he does when the fireflies dim their butts for the last time at the end of a season.
