Celebrate Earth Day in your own backyard

Earth Day is April 22nd. Let’s remember that even small actions in our own backyards can make a big difference for birds and the planet. By creating a bird-friendly habitat, you’re not just supporting local wildlife, you’re helping to sustain ecosystems that benefit us all.

We can start by planting native flowers, shrubs, and trees that provide food and shelter for birds. And avoid pesticides, which can harm birds and insects alike. Even reducing lawn space in favor of natural vegetation can give birds more foraging opportunities!

Together, we can make a world of difference, one backyard at a time.

Raising awareness with the National Audubon Society

This Earth Day, our partner, the National Audubon Society, is hosting exciting events and activities to raise awareness about environmental issues and champion conservation efforts around the theme, “Our Power, Our Planet.”

In the coming weeks, we’ll highlight our joint efforts to unleash that power—mobilizing both our communities to drive real change. Lawmakers listen when we speak up, so it’s critical we share our concerns about threats to wildlife and their habitats.

Member Spotlight: Richard's Must-Have Birding Book

Richard is 80 years young and wrote to us to say his Bird Buddy is the greatest Christmas gift he’s ever received:

Northern Cardinal: Males get brighter red if they eat more carotenoids (berries, peppers). Female Cardinals dig these colorful guys.

Tufted Tit Mouse: Their "peter-peter-peter" song sounds cheerful… but they also whisper-sing to avoid predators.

Blue Jay: They rub ants on their feathers—formic acid acts as bug repellent!

Black-Capped Chickadee: Their brains literally grow in fall (extra neurons!) to remember where they hid thousands of seeds.

Bonus Weirdness:

Robins hear worms underground by tilting their heads (they’re listening for wriggling vibrations).

Mourning Doves are terrible at nests (so flimsy you can see eggs through the twigs).

European Starlings were introduced to NYC by Shakespeare fans (true story—thanks, 1890s!).
