I became a millionaire selling Pokémon cards.

AND not by accident.. there’s a repeatable way this happens.

I’m going to give you a general framework you can apply to life, not just this industry.

Here’s a way a lot of you might understand it:

Pretend life is a video game, and you’re collecting power-ups.

For the sake of this, we’ll call those power-ups “unfair advantages.”

An unfair advantage might actually be completely fair. You might have earned it.

But effort aside… it gives you a leg up.

The more unfair advantages you have, the easier it is to win.

Or at the very least, the less effort it takes.

You can still win without them.

But these are forms of leverage.
And leverage lets you move faster.

And speed is usually correlated with success when you’re trying to do something new.

(Most of what I talk about comes from the lens of someone trying to innovate and win big. If you just want to run a stable, traditional business, we’re speaking slightly different languages.)

There are all types of unfair advantages.

You acquire them in all different ways.

Some are personal.
Some are business.

Here’s an example of a personal unfair advantage:

Joining the military can give a young man an edge over most people in general society.

The discipline, adaptability, and resilience you gain will allow you to push through challenges where others quit.

Then stack on top of that:

The GI Bill ( Free college, study abroad, time to think and plan. )
VA home loan ( No money down to buy a place to live. )
Healthcare ( Can be free for life! )
Potential monthly tax free payments ( Can cover rent or mortgage payments! )

Now you’ve created:

Less financial pressure
More time to think long-term
A longer runway to figure things out

That’s a real advantage. Other examples could be as simple as the support from a loving and supportive spouse.

Here’s an example in business:

You started a business 10 years ago in an industry based on allocations.

You figured something out early.
You scaled.
You built relationships.

Now the market is red hot.

Everyone else is fighting for 1…
And you’re getting 1,000.

A massive unfair advantage, earned by your hard work and dedication over years.

Outside of acquiring unfair advantages, you need a formula.

Something that defines the exact steps you’re going to repeat over and over again.

Because if you don’t…

You’ll chase every shiny object that shows up.

If you’re a leader, that means not getting distracted by new ideas just because they sound exciting.

A lot of “innovation” is just a dead end with good marketing.

If you’re a follower, it means being careful who you follow.

Because the crowd doesn’t know where it’s going.

And it will walk straight off a cliff together.

The game isn’t about working harder.

It’s about stacking advantages…

And running a system that compounds them.

Another big part of success is how much you actually have inside of you to give to your goals.

I spent a large portion of my 20s traveling the world, doing what I wanted to do… soaking it all in.

Experiencing the world like that gives you something most people don’t have.

It gives you perspective.

And if you pay attention, it gives you a bit of the divine spark that created this world… and that shows up later in the form of creativity.

Solo founders and non-venture-backed entrepreneurs win on creativity.

That’s the edge.

( Just don’t burn yourself out! )
